Postponing your wedding sucks.
Having to wait even longer for a day you’ve been nervously and excitedly anticipating for ages is no fun. But that doesn’t mean your wedding date needs to suck too.
There are a few different things you can do to mark the original date, so you can still enjoy the day and keep it special. Here are our favourite wedding postponement plans…
Have a virtual ceremony
Just because your ceremony can’t go ahead physically doesn’t mean you can’t host one virtually. Why not honour your original wedding plans with a virtual pre-ceremony ceremony?
Obviously you won’t want to perform your actual ceremony word-for-word, but you could modify it so that you can still celebrate now, without giving too much away for your new date.
If you were planning a celebrant-led wedding, you might want to ask them if they’ll help with the leading and the writing of it too. We loved this socially distant wedding ceremony, led by Humanist celebrant Zena Birch.
Raise a glass with your pals on video call
But you don’t need a celebrant to celebrate. If you’re not able to do a pre-ceremony ceremony, you can still mark your would-be wedding date by virtually gathering your family and friends for a video call celebration.
Ask everyone to come online at the time of your wedding with their favourite drink in hand, and together you can toast what would have been. (And will still be, very, very soon.)
Bonus: you’re not paying for Uncle Jeremy’s drinks and you can mute him when he’s had too many… Anete Lūsiņa and SkitterPhoto
Treat yourself
If there was an element of your day that you were really looking forward to, could you incorporate that into your plans on a smaller scale?
For example, if the cake was going to be the pièce de résistance, is your cake maker sending out letterbox cakes that you could enjoy? Is your florist sending out DIY bouquets through the post? Or can they arrange contactless deliveries to your doorstep?
Maybe this could look like you wearing an element of your wedding outfit, whether it be coveted shoes you’re sad won’t see the light of day for a few more months, or a headband you feel like you could take over the world in. (And we believe it, truly.)
Living room dance floor
There’s an ancient proverb that the solution to most of life’s setbacks is to dance around your living room with wild abandon, and that rings true here too.
There’s loads of incredible free DJ streams at the moment so that, no matter what type of music you’re into, you can crank the volume up and get grooving.
Bonus points to you if they play your first dance song during their set. (And if they don’t… take matters into your own hands!)
Re-enact your first date
One of the many lovely things about weddings is that they’re a celebration of the past, present and future. Why not come full circle by re-enacting your first date?
If you went to a museum, you could take advantage of one of their free online tours. Or if you went to an Indian restaurant, you could give the same dishes a crack back home, and serve them at a candlelit table.
It’s a lovely way to remember what you’ve come through so far, and how you’ve got each other for all the stuff to come.
If your first date was Netflix and Chill… good news! Antonio Guillem
